Whether as a novice I can delete some friends or do I have to be a Premium Member to do so.

If you are using a PC browser, hover the mouse on the 'friends' link in the blue/gray bar near top of page, and see if you can see an option called 'remove friends'.

If you can see the link, then try clicking it.
